Auditions

The Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) is open to talented student musicians in home, private or public schools who play stringed, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

Membership and placement are by audition only. Each player, including a returning musician from the previous year, is auditioned every year to ensure correct placement according to individual ability. Acceptance and placement decisions are at the sole discretion of the Artistic Staff and judges.

Participation

Upon acceptance to a BSYO ensemble, the musician and his/her parents/guardians are expected to make a serious and diligent commitment to that orchestra and to the organization.

Musicians are expected to attend weekly rehearsals, practice orchestra parts outside of rehearsal, and attend dress rehearsals and concerts as outlined in the organization’s schedule (published in August and modified as needed during the season). Musicians are expected to participate in their school music programs and are encouraged to study their instruments privately to maintain at least the level of competency demonstrated at the time of their audition and to continue their musical development.

Parents/guardians are expected to attend meetings of BSYO (annually), and are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents and participate in fundraising activities.

Violin Viola Cello Bass

Philharmonic & Symphony Orchestra

Prepare the following for your audition:

1. Solo piece. Prepare ONE MINUTE of a polished, recital-ready solo piece. You may play any work of your choice, but the level of difficulty should be an accurate representation of your technical and artistic ability. Remember, it is not what you play that matters most, but how well you play. Your solo piece need not be memorized. You may be asked to stop playing before you reach the end of your prepared piece; if this happens, please understand that it is only in the interest of time, not a reflection of your playing.
2. Excerpts. There are two musical excerpts for each instrument. Students will select what to playbased on the orchestra they wish to audition for.  Playing both excerpts is not a guarantee of acceptance into the Philharmonic.
Symphony Orchestra – Play only the first excerpt. You are NOT required to play the second.
Philharmonic Orchestra – Play BOTH excerpts.
If you are unfamiliar with the excerpts, consult with your private teacher or a coach who is familiarwith them. It is recommended that you also listen to a recording or live performance of the piece inorder to give yourself proper tempo and musical context. As with your solo piece, the performance of your excerpt should be an accurate representation of your technical and artistic ability.
With your solo and/or your prepared excerpt, you may be asked to play it again in a different manner (slower, faster, more lyrically, etc.). Please regard this as evidence of your musical flexibility, which will weigh heavily on the success of your audition.
3. Scales & technique. Students will be asked to play two major scales.  Symphony must play at least one octave; Philharmonic must play at least two octaves three where possible.  Scales will be selected from up to four sharps or four flats. All required scales must be memorized.  Automatically play the corresponding arpeggios to a scale.
4. Sight-reading. There will not be sight-reading in this year’s audition.
5. Orchestra placement. Student placement is competitive and is ranked in order of artistic quality.  Those qualities include superiority of tone, intonation, vibrato (as appropriate), dynamic range, musicality and general accuracy.  Although a student may be able to perform all the requirements for a particular orchestra, he or she may still not qualify based on the level of competition in a given year.
6. Auditions are closed to the public, including parents and families.

7. Prior participation in the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra is no guarantee of placement
in the same orchestra for the following year.
